Two shot, one killed outside Jamaica shop

By Courtney Dentch

A Jamaica shooting late Sunday night outside a grocery store on Sutphin Boulevard left one man dead and another in critical condition, police said.

Edrick Jones, 28, was killed when he was shot four times after being approached by four other men, police said.

A second man, 25, whose name was not released, was shot once in the back, and was taken to Jamaica Hospital where he was listed in critical condition Monday morning.

The shooting took place at 11:20 p.m. Sunday in front of the Liriano Grocery at 107-47 Sutphin Blvd. in Jamaica, police said. Four men approached Jones and the second victim on foot and began firing at them.

Jones was shot twice in the back, once in the leg and once in the groin, police said. He was taken to Mary Immaculate Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 11:43 p.m., police said.

The suspects took off on foot, and police had not made any arrests by presstime. The motive behind the shooting was not known, and the investigation was continuing, police said.

Signs of the shooting were clear at the corner of Sutphin Boulevard and Yates Road on Monday morning, just hours after the incident. Broken glass lined the street, and a large bullet hole remained in the window of Crowe’s Funeral Home, across the street from the convenience store.

An employee of the Liriano Grocery who was working at the time of the shooting was shocked by the incident.

“We just heard the shots,” said the employee, who refused to give his name. “Everyone was surprised,”

But the block is often subjected to crime and violence, he said.

“It happens a lot,” he said. “These two blocks – here and to 109th Avenue – are the worst.”

A small memorial was set up for Jones outside the Liriano Grocery store, with candles and a cardboard sign dedicated to a man known to his friends and family as Edy.

“In loving memory of Edy,” the sign read. “Rest in peace and we love you.”
