The Forest Hills Post Office has opened a mobile post office to help shorten the long lines postal customers face when they use the service.
U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Forest Hills) and City Councilwoman Melinda Katz (D-Forest Hills) arranged for a postal truck to open a window Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. to alleviate the 30 and 40 minute waits people often deal with at the Forest Hills Post Office.
“Forest Hills residents have a right to expect postal service that is easy, reliable and efficient,” Weiner said. “The mobile post office will make service quicker and more enjoyable and give everyone easier access to postal services.”
The mobile post office, which will be closed from Thursday to Tuesday, will alternate service among four locations. On Mondays and Fridays the mobile post office will be open in front of the Forest Hills Post Office at 106-28 Queens Blvd.
The mobile office will move to the Ridgewood Savings Bank at Queens Boulevard and 70th Street on Tuesdays. On Wednesdays it will be in front of the Duane Reade on Continental Avenue between Austin Street and Queens Boulevard and on Thursdays it will travel to the 62nd Drive Community Center at 108-50 62nd Dr.
Jacqulyn Giunta, a spokeswoman for Weiner, said the mobile offices will be open at least through the summer and no termination date has been set.
Customers can purchase stamps as well as send letters, certified mail and packages of up to four pounds at the mobile office. The service will only accept cash.
Customers who used the mobile office expressed relief that they could quickly mail a letter or send a small package.
“I like it because when you go in [the Forest Hills Post Office] there are so many people,” said Gladys Abu, who works in the community. “It’s much quicker.”
Madina Krikheli, a Forest Hills resident, added “it’s very nice. It’s easier. It saves you a lot of time. I hope they keep it.”
