The Long Island City YMCA will be hosting several new recreational and competitive sports leagues for the upcoming fall season.
The Y will tipoff its Men’s Basketball League the week of Sept. 16. Each team in the league will play a 10-game schedule with games being played Monday through Thursday with start times of 7 8:15 and 9:30 p.m. at redeemer Lutheran Church, located at 36-01 Bell Blvd. in Bayside. The cost is $500 per team (including numbered shirts) or $415 if the team has its own uniforms). Referees are $45 per game.
The Y’s Sunday Night Football League, a 5-on-5 hand touch division, will begin play on Sunday, Sept. 15, under lighted fields easily accessible by car and public transportation. Game times are 4:30, 5:45 and 7 p.m. Team and individual trophies will be presented to the championship team. The registration fee is $275 per team with $42 per game for three referees. Most games will be played on Sunday nights at Mafera park, located off Fresh Pond Road at the end of 68th Street in Ridgewood.
The Y will also be hosting its 2002 Touch Football Dirt League, featuring 6-on-6 one-hand touch play over a 12-game schedule and playoffs. Registration is $415 per team with both ‘A’ and ‘B’ divisions. The season will begin plat Sept. 7 and Sept. 8, at both Maurice Park and Flushing Memorial. Trophy and prizes will be awarded to the championship team. hardtop leagues also available.
Play in the Y’s Youth Roller Hockey Leagues, for players ages 12 through 18 in four age groups, will being Sept. 21. Games will be played at Queens rinks with a $500 prize and trophy going to the championship team. Registration is $300 per team.
the Sunday men’s Non-Checking and Checking Roller Hockey leagues will begin play on Sept. 8. Registration is $500 per team with officials’ fees being $54 for checking and $50 for non-checking. late registration allowed until Sept. 16. Each team, which can have 25-man rosters, will play 12 games at John DaSilva rink, located at 28th Street and 37th Avenue. the championship team will earn a trophy and prize.
the Y will also be hosting its 2002 Snowflake youth Baseball and Softball leagues. Opening Day is slated for Sept. 8 for players ages 12 through 16 in three separate divisions. The 10-game season will run through October with doubleheaders played on Saturdays at ballfields throughout Queens.
