Now that the gas tanks that were a Queens landmark are gone, what should be done with the site where they once stood? Keyspan owns the property that borders Elmhurst and Maspeth.

Although nobody is saying exactly what they do want, there seems to be universal agreement that the area should not be used for additional residential development. The schools in this part of Queens are already overcrowded. Adding large numbers of children to the mix would create a crisis in schools that are already overcrowded. The community is also opposed to the opening of big box type stores such as Home Depot.

We trust that the neighboring communities would be equally opposed to opening a waste-transfer station, a power plant or any kind of factory or warehouse that would increase truck traffic.

Finding a use for this property that will suit everyone won’t be easy. Good luck.
