Free weekend festival kicks off fall arts season

Where can you get a preview of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s wonderful collections, meet McGruff the crime-fighting dog, enjoy Lincoln Center musicians, take in a Flamenco dance demonstration, create African-American-inspired art and get an up-clo

Among the many arts institutions joining in to celebrate the city’s arts scene are Queens Botanical Garden, Queens Council on the Arts, Queens Museum of Art, Queens Theatre in the Park, Queens Tourism Council, Queens Zoo, Flushing Town Hall, Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning, Louis Armstrong House & Archives, MoMA/QNS and the Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum.

New Yorkers and visitors alike will have the unique opportunity to sample the arts and culture available throughout all five boroughs, including live music performances on two stages, museum displays, interactive children’s activities, raffles for theater tickets and more. This centrally-located celebration of the city’s cultural diversity will kick off the 2002 fall arts season, featuring more than 80 of New York’s best known and most beloved organizations from the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Bronx Zoo to the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden and more.

Other exhibitors at CultureFest will include the NYC Police Museum, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the New York City Ballet, the American Museum of Natural History, the Intrepid Sea-Air-Space Museum, the American Craft Museum, the Staten Island Children’s Museum, the American Folk Art Museum, the Studio Museum of Harlem and the Staten Island Botanical Garden.

The festival runs from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. at Bryant Park on 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue Saturday and Sunday.

Music ensemble the Drum Spirit of China, from Woodside, will perform at 12:20 p.m. on Saturday.

Flushing Council on Culture & the Arts – Flushing Town Hall will offer a children’s fun table, live music, video on cultural activities offered at Flushing Town Hall, literature distribution on programs including art exhibitions, jazz, opera, and classical music.

Jamaica Center for Arts & Learning will provide information on the various programs, exhibitions, performances at their location.

Louis Armstrong House & Archives will provide a continuous showing of “For the Love of Louis,” a video that highlights his career, life in Corona and treasures in the archives. There will also be free copies of the archives’ newsletter, The Dippermouth News, Satchmo’s recipe for red beans & rice and T-shirts for sale.

The Noguchi Museum will offer hands-on activities for families, multimedia displays, distribution of museum brochures and printed matter.

The Queens Council on the Arts will have a VCR set up with video clips running, a Mahendi hand painter and other arts & crafts activities.

The Queens Tourism Council will distribute information on activities, cultural attractions and events in Queens. They will also have many giveaways and run a raffle.
