Filling out job applications

1. Dress appropriately. Make a good first impression. Also, you may be called right then for the interview.

2. Read the directions before you write.

3. Be prepared. Take all the information you might need with you:

a. Dates and addresses of all last work experience (paid and volunteer)

b. Names and addresses of schools attended

c. License numbers, social security number, health card, etc.

d. Resume (if you have one)

4. Print neatly, or type. Make sure spelling and grammar are correct. Take two copies of the application, just in case. Be positive that the application is easily readable.

5. Answer all items or explain items left blank.

6. Include any and all skills that apply to this job (including hobbies, clubs, volunteer work, etc.).

7. Attempt to write up your skills and experience to match what you think the employer is looking for. Don’t sell yourself short; include information that would give the employer a better picture of your special talents and skills.

8. If there are problem questions about your health, legal status, or reasons for leaving school or jobs, try to be as positive as possible and leave long explanations for the interview. Then be prepared to deal with the question later.
