The red-hot Queensborough men’s basketball team won its seventh game in its last eight attempts Saturday, defeating Orange Community College, 83-66, at home Saturday.
Dewayne Thomas, playing in his third game of the season, posted up a game-high 23 points and 13 rebounds. Thomas has provided much needed scoring, especially with star forward Malik Frazier unavailable for the game.
Former Cardozo standout Teron Simpson played well, scoring 17 points and grabbing 8 rebounds from his point guard position.
Queensborough (7-6, 6-5 Region XV) took a 20-point lead into the locker room and seemed to be cruising to another victory, but in the second half Orange guard Corey Dixon began to find his touch and the Colts went on a run, trailing by just 10 points with 8:30 left in the second half.
But Simpson hit a key three-pointer to push the lead back to 13 and Orange would not be heard from for the rest of the day. Johann Yorke, who left the game late in the second half with an ankle injury, scored 15 points and hustled for 11 rebounds. Overall, five Tigers scored in double figures.
After playing at Region XV powerhouse Suffolk Community College in a game scheduled for Tuesday, Queensborough remains on the road to battle CUNYAC foe Bronx Community College Thursday at 7 p.m.
York College 71, John Jay 61. Kwesi Liverpool led York (6-9, 6-0 CUNY) with 13 points while Timmy White scored a game-high 18 points for John Jay (4-11, 2-4).
New York Tech 60, Queens College 55. Alex McLean had 19 points and 15 rebounds and Lance Hazel scored all 14 of his points in the second half in a loss at New York Tech Saturday afternoon. Patrick Tunstead scored a game-high 20 points for Tech (9-4, 7-3).
Women’s Basketball
Pittsburgh 75, St. John’s 51. Haley Harguth scored a game-high 20 points with 4 steals off the bench, Mandy Wittenmyer had 14 points and Latoya Kincaid and Laine Selwyn netted 11 points apiece for Pittsburgh (9-6, 1-3 Big East) Saturday night at Seton Hall University. Shemika Stevens had 12 points and Patrycja Gulak added 11 for St. John’s (6-10, 0-5).
New York Tech 62, Queens College 52. Freshman Erin White scored 14 points, Erin Dollard added 10 points and Amy Mulligan netted 6 points and grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds for Queens (6-8, 5-6) Saturday at Tech. Former August Martin standout Tamika Cox had 13 points and 8 rebounds and was one of three players to score in double figures for Tech (6-7, 5-5).
John Jay 40, York 34. Garrianne Brown had 15 points and 5 rebounds for York (3-11, 3-4 CUNY) while Cherith Porter led John Jay (6-8, 1-5) with 10 points and 16 rebounds.
Hatten the man again
For a second time this year, St. John’s senior shooting guard Marcus Hatten earned Big East Player of the Week honors after leading the Red Storm to a stirring 77-72 win at Georgetown Saturday.
Hatten tied a career-high with 34 points in St. John’s come-from-behind win, including 19 points in the final seven minutes as the Red Storm rallied from a 16-point second half deficit.
Hatten shot 14-for-25 from the floor with three steals and three assists.
The 6-foot-1 senior guard leads St. John’s and the Big East in scoring, averaging 23.4 points per game.
