African Art museum chosen as cultural site of the month

The Museum for African Art is dedicated to increasing public understanding and appreciation of African art and culture. It is recognized worldwide as the pre-eminent organizer of exhibitions and devoted exclusively to historical and contemporary African art.

On view through March 15 is the “Neger (Negro) – Don’t Call Me” exhibit, a video and sound installation by Ingrid Mwangi that combines projected images and audio components.

Other free special events taking place at the museum throughout Black History Month include:

Saturday, Feb. 8

1:30 p.m. — Masks of the Congo Basin lecture by Frank Herreman.

3:30 p.m. — African and Jazz drumming concert with Obo Addy & Andrew Cyrille

Saturday, Feb. 15

1:30 p.m. — Latin Folkloric Drumming Workshop with Andrea Pryor de Manrique. Learn to play Latin folkloric music with drums, claves and bells (all ages; limited to 30 participants).

3:30 p.m. — Afro-Caribbean Dance Workshop with Goussy Celestin and Andrea Pryor. Dance to the hot rhythms of Bomba and RaRa from Puerto Rico and Haiti. (Wear comfortable clothing. All ages; limited to 30 participants.)

Saturday, Feb. 22

1:30 p.m. — Lecture by Dr. Emily Hanna, curator of Arts of Africa and the Americas, Birmingham Museum of Art: “Facing the Invisible: Making Masquerade Among the Bwa of Burkina Faso.”

3:15 p.m. — Lecture by Dr. Herbert Cole, professor emeritus, History of Art and Architecture, UC Santa Barbara: “The King of Masks: How the Igbo Ijele Renews the World.”

The Cultural Institution of the Month program highlights a different New York City cultural organization each month and is designed to promote arts and culture in New York. Next month, NYC & Company will feature the Lower East Side Tenement Museum and the Asia Society and Museum in April.

Programs are free with admission, except when otherwise noted. Workshops are limited to 30 participants. To pre-register for events, call 718-784-7700, Ext. 117. Priority will be given to those individuals or groups who call in advance. Walk-in registration is also welcome, space permitting. All programs are subject to change.
