Girls’ B Division
Cosmo Plumbing held on to defeat Berardi Bakery, 16-12. Cosmo Plumbing’s offense was led by Christine McGrory’s 8 points, with help from Jaclyn Kulogowski and Jenna Fogelman.
Megan Latham and Samantha LiTrenta added to the score with some much improved foul shooting. Berardi Bakery put forth a strong team effort until the final seconds, but strong defense from Cosmo’s Colleen Brennan, Tatiana Celcis and Amy Dhaliwal locked in the win for their team.
Berardi Bakery defeated Metro, 33-6. Berardi’s Alina Durkovic, Chrissy Kuzniewski and Maria Montoya took advantage of their height to lead the charge. Carmen Mateo, Angela Mohamed and Kristina Giambrone contributed with their shooting and ball handling. Metro’s Kimberly Simon and Tanya Kozakis were relentless in their efforts to keep Metro in the game
Major Division
In a Major Division game Marble Mode defeated Big Apple Barbeque by 4 points in a closely contested game. Dave Martin led Marble Mode with his outstanding guard play, and “Smokin'” Joe Montgomery, Anthony Kapovic and “3 point” Nicky Vigorito were strong off the boards.
Zach Frankel and Ralph Glavan also contributed to this victory. Coach Vigorito displayed his usual basketball know-how, helping to design both offensive and defensive schemes that contributed to the win. James Kozakis and Rob Dodge played valiantly for Big Apple.
Graham Restoration, down by as many as 13 points in the first half, came back in a dramatic victory against Varsi Deli, thanks to excellent offense by Joey Graham, Tommy Franceschini, Philip Leist and Erhan Sencer. In the second half, Graham played tremendous defense with Mike Gambino, Paul Roedell, Wesley Cuevas and George Fahim helping to hold the lead. For Varsi, Mike Berndt, Andy Lehr, Jose Barcena and Amit Chada played a great game.
Varsi Deli had an excellent game on defense in an important win over a very tough Marble Mode team, 51-37. After poor shooting in the first quarter, Lehr found the range the rest of the way and chalked up 15 points on a variety of jumpers and drives in the lane — many coming off nice assists from his teammates.
Berndt ran the offense for Varsi and scored 10 points, as well as playing excellent defensively, in disrupting Marble’s rhythm on offense.
Keith Caparelli and Barcena scored 10 and 12 points, respectively, and did their usual great work in controlling the glass, while John Kiely contributed 4 points and also played well on the defensive end.
For Marble, Kapovic had 16 points and Martin played well in the backcourt. Glavan also hit two big jumpers to give Marble a big lift in the first half.
Bantam Division
In a real defensive battle, Whitestone Diner defeated Jam Service Company, 16-14. Leading the way for Whitestone Diner was Terry Tarpe with 10 points. Kevin Campbell, who continues to improve every week, scored 4 points for Whitestone.
Whitestone Diner’s Vinny Depperman scored the final 2 points, which turned out to be the margin of victory. Strong defense by Chris Coppolino, Joey Bell, Louis Kabatnik and Pat Thompson helped hold a good Jam team to 14 points. Patrick Berndt led the offense for Jam with 8 points. Also contributing on offense for Jam was Kenny Lehr with 4 points and Mike Gallagher with 2 points.
Jam Service Company rebounded from a tough loss with a great team effort in defeating Bashnagel Bros. Roofing, 33-10. Jam got off to a fast start with 10 points in the first four minutes, and every player get into the scoring column before the final buzzer sounded.
Berndt led the way with 13 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals as he converted on a variety of drives and putbacks underneath the basket. Lehr had 8 points and 3 assists, helping to jumpstart the Jam offense.
Francisco Kyriocuv had 4 points on two nice outside shots, while Sal DiMaria also hit a big shot in the first half as he continued to play great defense. David Hazim and Gallagher were tenacious on defense, as usual, and both contributed a basket as did Jose Hasng.
Scoring for Bashnagel was Dennis Brennan, Frank Obidienzo and Nick Loccisano.
Donnolly Home for Adults defeated Franklin’s Printing, 28-18. Thomas Regan and Jonathan Lee each scored 12 points for Donnolly.
Kristopher Parente added the other 4 points. Christopher Owen and Arthur Avakian made some key defensive plays. Great first-half shooting by Regan, scoring 10 points, gave Donnolly the early lead it needed for the victory. Franklin’s Printing had 18 points thanks to great offensive playing by Jeff Johnston, Steven McGrory and Billy Falides.
Minor Division
Boars Head scooped up a win over Carvel of Whitestone in a game that came down to Giancarlo Santillo’s hitting both clutch free throws to win it. Chris Garthright, Elliot Nasser, Antonio Gismundi, Sam Diaz and Sal Romano added valuable baskets for Boars Head. Ed Nasser and Manny Barcena provided strong defense. Carvel was led by Michael Wiederhold, who zoned out for 27, and Max Meltzer, who had 24.
In a well-played game by both teams, Pizza Chef outlasted Boars Head, 40-36. Joe Depperman scored 12 points, Joe Shade had 10 and Mike Kern chipped in with 8. All played an outstanding game on offense with help from Anthony Romanelli and John Montoya controlling the boards.
Nick Coppolino, Chris Franceschini and Steve Chou played outstanding defense the whole game, keeping Boars Head from driving to the basket and forcing them to take outside shots. Garthright, Santillo and Elliot and Edward Nasser played well.
Cristom Construction beat Larry’s Auto Collision, 9-4. Christopher Regan scored 5 points and Christina DeVito had 4. Joseph Favalora and Chris Romano helped bring Cristom to a victory with great defensive plays. For Larry’s Auto Collision, Brittany Naposki and Christina Krupp each scored a basket. Kyle Walsh made some key defensive plays. Led by the scoring of Tom Foley with 10 points and Jenna Schiffman with 8 points, Pee Wee Folks Pre School defeated Dial A Balloon, 20-9, to improve its record to 7-0-1. Great rebounding by Mike McCutchen and good defense by Dennis Egan, Christina Ferrara and Samantha Petrakis helped in an all-around team effort. Team 1 Nets defeated Team 3 in a close 15-13 contest. Tough defensive play and rebounding by John Sideris, Ismael Nellas, Simon Sruishetal and Eli Velasquez contributed in the win. Anthony Scarallo kept his team ahead with his scoring and game-winning basket. Team 3 was led by Christian Cruz, Matthew Mora, John Falidal and Christian Espinal.
