Accolade music series ends with Woodwind Spectacular

Musica Reginae’s Accolade Concert Series 2002-2003 continues in April with the “Woodwinds Spectacular.” The fourth and last of the Accolade Concert Series, this is Musica Reginae’s first venture in a chamber music concert for winds and

The Transatlantic Winds, formed in the early 1980s to bring woodwind ensemble music to the community, has been a staple of the music scene. “It is with great pleasure that we present them as part of the Accolade Concert Series for our audiences in Queens,” said spokeswoman LeeAnn Close.

The Transatlantic Winds are: David Gailing, clarinet, William Parrish, oboe, Jonathan Watkins, bassoon, Paul Riggio, French horn, Marco Granados, flute. Also playing at the performance will be Josephine Parascandolo, piano and Maestro David Close, piano. As always, Maestro Close is the host for this performance.

The program will include “Variations on a Folksong” by Jan Pieters Sweelinck (1562-1621) arranged by Ernest Lubin; “Sonata for Clarinet and Piano” by Arnold Bax, an important English composer of the early 20th century who evokes the musical world of Brahms and Tchaikovsky with a distinctive modern feel; “The Easy Winners” by Scott Joplin, transcribed for woodwind quintet by Anthony Iannaccone; and “Maple Leaf Rag” by Scott Joplin, transcribed for woodwind quintet by Arthur Frankenpole.

“These infectiously entertaining Joplin ‘Rags’ arranged for woodwinds exploit the wonderful colors of the clarinet, bassoon, oboe and French horn,” Close said.

“Trois Pieces Breves” by Jacques Ibert and “Quintet for Piano, Oboe, Clarinet, Horn and Bassoon” by W. A. Mozart, K.452, a “classic” Mozart at the height of his powers, round out the bill.

The concert will be held Sunday, April 6, at 4 p.m., at Flushing Town Hall, 137-35 Northern Blvd. Call 718-279-4842 for tickets or more information.
