Theater, dance workshops offer summer to remember

Prospective performers, ages 6 through 18, may shape their talent and gain new skills at the Theatre Arts Center’s Summer Performing Arts Workshop now in residence at the Professional Performing Arts Center at Queensborough Community College in Baysi

The workshop was formerly held at the Garden School in Jackson Heights.

The 2003 Workshop Series, slated to run four weeks from June 30 to July 27, offers classes in acting, musical theatre, voice, jazz, tap, ballet, hip-hop, on-camera technique, mime, comedy improvisation, audition technique and more. All classes are conducted by industry professionals, and will be held at the College’s 800-seat performing arts center complex.

“This is an excellent match,” said Sophie Foglia, Executive Director of Queensborough’s Professional Performing Art Series. “Our theater, already the home to the Queens Symphony Orchestra and host to several major performing groups, offers a perfect arena for growing talent,” said Foglia, adding the students at the College already make great use of the facility as interns and performers.

The summer workshop is geared to attract talent of all levels including teens and children. Auditions, required to ensure appropriate placement, will be conducted Monday, March 24, from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., Saturday, March 29. from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Saturday, April 5 from 11a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Auditions will be held in the College’s Performing Arts Center, located in the Humanities Building. Appointment times will be made according to the age of the student.

Faculty on deck for the 2003 Summer Workshop Series includes Arte Phillips of Broadway’s Swing, MTV Choreographer of the Year, Jamale Graves, and Ed Ferron from one of New York’s largest Film Schools. The program was founded in 1985 by Kristine Lewis in Bucks County, PA. That program is still going strong. Lewis and Jackson Heights resident Robert Laconi are co-directors of the Queens program. Transportation is available for the summer program, and students come from throughout Queens and Long Island.
