Former Community Board 8 District Manager Annabelle Glasser was honored with a moment of silence at the CB 8 meeting last week in Jamaica Hills. She died on Jan. 16 of breast cancer at age 72.
“As district manager, Annabelle was able to get all agencies to deliver the services we deserve,” said Al Daly, the former chairman of CB 8 during the meeting at 81-15 164th St. Daly worked closely with Glasser until they retired at same time in 1991.
“She was a very faithful person to everyone on the board,” Daly continued. “We will keep her in our heart and memories for many years to come.”
Glasser joined CB 8, which serves Fresh Meadows, Kew Gardens Hills, Briarwood, Hillcrest, Utopia, Jamaica Hills, Jamaica Estates and south Flushing, when it was first created in 1977. She served as assistant district manager until 1981, when she became district manager.
When not working with CB 8, Glasser spent much of her time volunteering for the Ethical Culture Society of Queens, a humanist group, said her husband, Marvin Glasser, 75. She served as president of the Queens group for eight years and president of the national humanist group for several years.
According to humanist philosophy, human beings are the most important things on Earth and should concern themselves with the present, not with their afterlife, Marvin Glasser said.
Glasser was very dynamic and enjoyed hosting meetings at her home in Bayside, her husband said. She liked performing administrative tasks, such as doing income taxes and balancing checkbooks.
“Our roles were reversed. She did all the things like take care of the finance,” Marvin Glasser said. “She found it relaxing, the routine stuff. And I'd do the cooking.”
In addition to her husband, Glasser is survived by two sons and one daughter.
