FLUSHING — A man was charged with stalking New York Mets General Manager Steve Phillips Tuesday following five months of incidents that all occurred at Shea Stadium, the Queens district attorney said. District Attorney Richard Brown said police have charged Matthew Barnes, 27, of 510 Atlantic Ave. in Brooklyn, with stalking, criminal trespass, harassment and menacing. The defendant faces up to one year in jail or could be fined $1,000 if convicted.
“The defendant is alleged to have repeatedly acted with intent to harass, annoy or alarm Mets General Manager Steve Phillips by shouting demands to see him and to have acted in a manner that caused him to be fearful and concerned for his safety,” Brown said.
Barnes was arrested Monday.
The district attorney alleges Barnes tried to communicate with Phillips by yelling, cursing and shouting demands to see the general manager between Jan. 3 and May 19. Brown said security had to escort Barnes away on each occasion.
Barnes had been arrested in February for criminal trespass following a notice police served him in January, Brown said. His case had been adjourned pending dismissal but will now be prosecuted, the DA said.
HOLLIS HILLS — A passenger in a car died after the vehicle collided with a tractor trailer Monday night on Hillside Avenue at 232nd Street, police said. An unidentified 18-year-old was pronounced dead at Long Island Jewish Hospital about 10:42 p.m., police said, after a 2000 Volkswagen Jetta traveling eastbound hit the westbound tractor trailer, cops said.
The driver and rear seat passenger in the Jetta were taken to North Shore Hospital in stable condition, authorities said.
The tractor trailer driver was also taken to Long Island Jewish Hospital in stable condition, police said.
There have been no arrests in the investigation, police said.
FRESH MEADOWS — An unidentified 21-year-old man was shot once in the chest and killed by another unidentified man, police said, Saturday about 3 p.m. The incident took place between 182nd and 183rd streets and police pronounced the victim dead on arrival, cops said. Authorities said the suspect fled in a Green Dodge vehicle.
AUBURNDALE — A 28-year-old man was stabbed twice Saturday about 4:45 a.m. during a dispute in front of 42-31 162nd Street, police said.
The victim was taken to New York Hospital Queens and was listed in stable condition, police said.
No arrests had been made in the ongoing investigation, cops said.
FLUSHING — Two teenagers were stabbed in a fight on a busy street corner in downtown Flushing Friday afternoon, police said.
The teens were rushed to New York Hospital Queens in non-life threatening condition, police said.
Police cordoned off the northwest corner of Roosevelt Avenue and Main Street in front of the entrance to the No. 7 train after the fight, which occurred at about 2:45 p.m.
Police believed the fight started on the subway.
JAMAICA — A 25-year-old man was shot in the leg while standing in front of 110-41 158th St.Tuesday, police said.
A motive for the shooting, which occurred at about 5:44 p.m., was not known, and police made no arrests in the ongoing investigation.
The victim was taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition, police said.
RICHMOND HILL — A 20-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by a 25-year-old man inside a building on 83rd Avenue in the early morning of May 14, police said. The man exited the building’s elevator and pulled the woman out into the hallway to commit the crime, police said.
Cops said the man then fled, taking the victim’s handbag. No arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation, police said.
JAMAICA — A 46-year-old livery cab driver was assaulted Saturday afternoon after two unidentified men pretended to pull guns on the man when approaching his car at 150th Street and Archer Avenue, police said.
The men took the man’s wallet about 1:50 p.m. and then fled the scene, police said.
There have been no arrests made in the ongoing investigation, police said.
FAR ROCKAWAY — A 15-year-old man was shot by an 18-year-old man Monday about 7:45 p.m. in front of 431 Beach 63rd Street following a dispute, police said.
Virgil Johnson, of 443 Beach 54th St., was arrested and charged with assault and criminal possession of a weapon, police said.
The victim was taken to Jamaica Hospital and listed in stable condition, police said.
SOUTH JAMAICA — An 18-year-old man was shot once in the head early Sunday morning at the intersection of 118th Avenue and Sutphin Boulevard and later died at a hospital, police said.
Ronnie Hardy, of 137-32 132 Ave., died about 2:30 p.m. Monday at Mary Immaculate Hospital from his injuries, cops said. There have been no arrests made in the ongoing investigation, authorities said.
LINDENWOOD — Two men in their 20s suffered gunshot wounds to their legs Monday about 12:20 a.m., police said, at 78th Street and Glenmore Ave.
One unidentified victim was taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition and the other refused medical assistance, police said.
The investigation was ongoing, police said.
FAR ROCKAWAY — A man survived two gunshots Saturday and was listed in stable condition after an early morning dispute, police said.
The unidentified 29-year-old was shot once in the back and once in the chest about 2:50 a.m. at 2237 Dix Ave., police said. He was later taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition, cops said.
The investigation was ongoing, police said.
ASTORIA — A 43-year-old man was harassed with anti-gay remarks and attacked by two men Tuesday night at the corner of 30th Avenue and Crescent Street, police said.
The two unidentified attackers made the remarks from a car, then exited the vehicle and punched and kicked the victim, according to police. The incident occured at about 6:50 p.m.
The victim was removed to Astoria Hospital where he was listed in stable condition. The men fled the scene and there were no arrests in the ongoing investigation, police said.
ASTORIA — A 35-year-old man pretending to wield a bomb during a bank robbery last Thursday morning at 10:55 a.m. was arrested trying to evade police after the incident, cops said. Michael Harris, of 4-24 Astoria Blvd. had allegedly taken $300 from the HSBC bank at 51-20 Northern Blvd. and told a bank teller he had a package with a bomb inside, police said.
After taking the money, he left the scene but was later taken into custody by police from the 114th Precinct, who caught the man running inside the Sunnyside Train Yard at 39 Skillman Avenue, police said.
Cops said they investigated the package and later determined it was safe. The investigation is ongoing.
ELMHURST — A 27-year-old man was shot once in the leg Monday night at the corner of 94th Street and Astoria Boulevard after he tried to stop another man from robbing him, police said. The incident occurred about 6:40 p.m. after the robber demanded money from the man, cops said.
The unidentified man was taken to New York Hospital Queens where he was listed in stable condition, police said. The investigation is ongoing.
CORONA — One of two robbers shot a 25-year-old man about 1 a.m. Saturday morning at 101st Street and Northern Boulevard after an attempted robbery, police said.
The victim was taken to New York Hospital Queens and listed in stable condition, police said.
Cops described the two suspects as ranging in age from 20 to 25 and wearing black apparel. Police said both men were armed with black handguns. The investigation is ongoing, police said.
