To The Point: College Pt. Ambulance Corps holds open house

Welcome to the Point. The Point being College Point. The Point was bustling due to the many runners from the Skaggs-Walsh Marathon.

Congratulations to Frances and Al Rabasca as they celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary on May 24.

Congratulations to Maureen Puppolo, who bowled 201 and 210, and to Patty McCormick, who bowled 204, at Whitestone Lanes.

Speedy recovery to Robert Spitz and Philip LaFurno.

The First Reformed Church of College Point held a service of remembrance and thanksgiving for Alice Nagasawa. Her favorite hymn was “Mansion Over the Hilltop.”

The NYRR Skaggs-Walsh 5K overall male winner was Joseph Tumbarello, and the overall female winner was Stacy Creamer.

The NYRR Queens Half-Marathon overall male winner was Paul Mwangi, and the overall female winner was Allison Kerr.

The College Point Community Ambulance Corps President Christopher Legaz welcomed people to an open house. There were American Red Cross and disaster planning workshops.

Information was given on emergency equipment on the ambulance, and why and how it is used was explained. There also were demonstrations on CPR and AED. Free helpful information was given and blood pressure was taken. The base is at 123-06 18th Ave. For information, call 718-353-0199.

The corps is the oldest volunteer ambulance squad in New York City, having been founded in 1941. It provides free emergency ambulance service, hypertension screening, lending of canes and crutches and teaching of CPR to the community. The corps is a totally volunteer organization that receives all of its funds from the community and grant programs.

It is in the middle of its fund drive and is actively seeking dedicated 18-year-olds to join. Training as a New York state emergency medical technician is provided free of charge to all volunteers. Uniforms also are provided free of charge. The College Point Community Ambulance Corps held an open house at its headquarters on 18th Avenue.

The following events will take place at the Poppenhusen Institute: Saturday, June 7, at 10 a.m. will be the College Point Historic Walking Tour. The event is approximately two hours, with a $6 fee that includes cookies and lemonade at the end of the tour. Preregistration is required.

Saturday, June 21, is the 140th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg concert. The event will cost $3. From 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. the Americana Brass Band Sextet will be performing Civil War music free. From 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. there will be a lecture by Professor Gordon Shay. Tickets for the concert and lecture must be obtained in advance.

On Saturday, June 28, at 2 p.m. there will be a history of the NYC Police Department from the colonial period forward, with speaker James L. Coll. There is no charge.

On Sunday, July 6, at 6 p.m. there will free concert at MacNeil Park featuring The American Concert Band with Dr. Kirby Jolly. A 30-piece band will perform show tunes, classical, big band and Civil War music.

On Sunday, July 13, at 6 p.m. there will be a free concert at MacNeil Park featuring Stout-Sea Shanties, Songs of the tall ships, Civil War and other 19th century music.

On Sunday, July 20, at 6 p.m. there will be a free concert at MacNeil Park – Morning Star – authentic Irish Music.

On Saturday, July 26, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., Poppenhusen will present Garden Tea with Mrs. Poppenhusen and new historic College Point slide presentation “Then and Now.” Tickets are $15 and must be purchased in advance.

On Sunday, July 27, at 6 p.m. there will be a free concert at MacNeil Park. The Something Special Orchestra will perform the ever-popular sounds of the big bands.

Boy Scout Troop 20 from the First Reformed Church will have a fund-raiser car wash at the Greenpoint Bank parking lot on 14th Avenue and 123rd Street on Sunday, June 8, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. This troop, sponsored by St. Fidelis, has been very active.

The scouts provided service twice over the same weekend, manning a water station at the Queens Half-Marathon and participating in the shore cleanup at MacNeil Park. Life Scout Andrew Jackson held his Eagle Scout Leadership Project, a child safety day at St. Fidelis.

Life Scout John Mulvey will be performing his project, graffiti removal, for several College Point non-profit organizations. Life Scouts Tom Arocho and Dan Megerdichian have completed their projects and await their Eagle Scout Board of Review.
