The 16- to 17-year-old Beep America White Sox snapped a four-game losing streak with a big win against Bayside North Sunday. Having not played in three weeks because of the rain, the Beep America White Sox got the bats going early, scoring three runs.
The middle of the lineup did the most damage. Adam Yager went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and three runs scored; Gabby Hernandez went 1-for-3 with a pair of RBIs; Mike Albarella continued his hot streak, going 2-for-3; James Ferraria went 2-for-2 with a deep home run to center field; and David Chapman went 2-for-2.
Mike Albarella had a strong pitching game and David Chapman closed it out in the last to give the Beep America White Sox the win.
Greg’s Tire and Auto Mets advance to semifinals
Greg’s Tire and Auto has picked the right time of the year to play some nitty gritty baseball. The Mets advanced to the semifinals by defeating the Yankees in extra innings with a walk off a home run by Jonathon Kruczowy in the bottom of the seventh.
The Mets had the Yankees off stride all game by executing perfect bunts and getting some timely hits.
The Yankees also played well, with Scott Gandiisqui having a great day at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a single triple and a monster home run that put the Yankees up 7-6 in the top of the seventh.
It got exciting in the bottom of the seventh when, with two outs, Mike Costanzo hit a single to right and Pat Florian was walked. The big blow was Kruczowy’s opposite field home run.
The Mets celebrated, and both teams walked off with their heads high after this great game.
Ed Dillon, the Mets second baseman, said after the game that the Yankees were a great team. The Mets move on to play the Astros in the semifinal best 2-out-of-3.
Joe’s Pizza Cyclones advance to championship series
Joe’s Pizza Cyclones took the first two games of the best-of-three division series from the Tigers to earn a spot in the Glen Oaks International Championship Series. The series-clinching win was a hard-fought, close and very exciting game that went down to the final strike.
The Tigers came out to play, and it was evident early on as the Tiger infield turned in three beautiful defense plays to shut the Cyclones down in the first inning. Sean Dolan recorded all three putouts as Ryan Barello, Robert C. and Eric Walpole each had a first-inning assist.
In the Tigers’ home first inning, Ryan Barello hit a drive to deep right for a bases-clearing triple to highlight a four-run inning. The Cyclones struck back quickly as Billy Hannigan lined a bases-clearing double to put his team into a 5-4 lead in the second. The Tigers’ Eric Walpole scored to tie the game at 5 after three innings.
Blake Cholost and Trevor Stark opened the Cyclones’ fourth inning with base hits and were almost left stranded if not for Scott Carey’s clutch two-strike, two-out line-drive single to center field. The Cyclones scored their eighth and final run when Blake singled with two outs in the sixth and stole second base. Trevor Stark then delivered his own two-strike, two-out clutch hit to drive Blake home.
Trevor Stark, who is the Cyclones’ starting pitcher, settled down after the first inning and allowed only one more run. James Wolfin came on in relief and pitched beautifully. James struck out five while allowing only one hit over the next two innings. James was helped when catcher Joey Shafer threw out a runner attempting to steal second base.
In the Tigers’ home sixth inning, James tired and walked the bases loaded, putting the winning run at the plate with nobody out. Cyclones’ ace, Blake Cholost, was summoned to the mound to try to save the game. In a masterful performance, Blake struck out the side without allowing a run to seal the win at 8-5.
An amazing stat that points to the excellent defense played by the Tigers throughout this game was that the first three batters in the Cyclones’ order did not strike out once. They hit the ball hard in all nine at bats, and the Tigers turned each batted ball into an out.
Despite the gutsy performance by the Tigers, the amazing Cyclones still found a way to win.
The first game of the playoff series saw the Tigers jump out to a 1-0 lead as Eric Walpole scored on Sean Dolan’s base hit. However, the Cyclones’ bats were hot and they delivered 11 runs on eight hits in just the first two innings. Danny Graham’s long triple to deep right highlighted the seven-run second inning. The Cyclones went on to a big 17-6 win in the series opener.
The Cyclones’ team effort in this exciting division series also received contributions from Rohan Shah, Rahul Kadakia, Jazz Singh, Matt Dykeman, Steven Pelan and Michael Kelly, whose catch at second base helped thwart a Tigers’ rally in the first game.
McDonald’s Royals battle J.J. Peabodys, Barber Shop, Hunan Cafe
The McDonald’s Royals and the J.J. Peabodys Rangers played another Friday night game to a very boisterous and enthusiastic crowd. The Royals pounded the ball from the opening pitch until the last out. Sean Brodersen had two home runs and four RBIs, and Billy Burkart had a home run and three RBIs. Jimmy Curran also had a home run.
Brodersen, Burkart and Curran have been battling all season for the team lead in home runs. Christopher Behr, Joshua Persaud and Paul Benoit also contributed to the offensive attack with three hits each. The defensive, which has been the team’s strong point all year, was awesome again tonight.

After a rainout of Saturday’s game, the McDonald’s Royals played the Ideal Barber Shop Seals in an 8 a.m. matchup on Sunday, June 8. The Royals were still removing sand from their eyes in the first inning when the Seals scored six runs to start the game.
Michael Ciminera got injured early, but when he returned it sparked the team and they rallied behind him. Conor Maher had two triples and a homer, Ryan Perez had four hits, and Devon Brenner, Billy Burkart, Sean Brodersen and Paul Benoit had three hits apiece.
The defense sparkled with tremendous plays by Mark Spano (who also had four hits), Jimmy Curran, Conor Maher and Michael Ciminera. Mark Spano is probably one of, if not the best, defensive player in this division, making great plays wherever he plays in the field.
After giving up six runs in the first inning, the Royals only gave up two more runs over the next five innings, having three innings where they retired the side 1, 2, 3. The defense of the Royals is the team’s backbone, improving each and every game.
The Seals also made some great defensive plays, stopping the Royals’ rallies several times during the game. This is another young team that will be a force to reckon with next year when a lot of the players graduate to the International Division.
The final score was McDonald’s Royals 19, Ideal Barber Shop Seals 8. Conor Maher and Mark Spano received the game balls. The Royals are 9-0 on the season. Their next game is Sunday, June 15, at 8 a.m. against the Hunan Cafe Twins.

The McDonald’s Royals played the Hunan Cafe Twins on a beautiful Sunday morning at the Oval. The Royals’ offense was explosive as usual, with Javed Khan getting four hits, including a triple and two RBIs; Sean Brodersen hitting another homer and getting four RBIs; Michael Ciminera getting three hits with three RBIs; Conor Maher hitting a double and getting three RBIs; and numerous hits and RBIs from Billy Burkart, Conall Ryan and Ryan Perez.
The defense, which has been the team’s strength all year, was fantastic again with Paul Benoit, Mark Spano, Robert Groth, Jimmy Curran, Billy Burkart and Conall Ryan making some outstanding plays along with some clutch hits. The Twins are a much-improved team from our earlier games with them.
The team’s fielding was outstanding due to some of the boys having very strong arms. Their hitting was also very good, moving the runners from base to base, inning after inning. Five game balls were given out this game, which could just as easily have been 11. The game balls for the Royals went to Khan, Ciminera, Brodersen, Spano and Burkart. The next game is Friday, June 20, at 6 p.m.
