The McDonalds Royals played the J.J. Peabody Rangers Friday in a four-inning game shortened due to darkness. The offensive attack of James Curran, Michael Ciminera, Sean Brodersen, Paul Benoit, Javed Khan, Mark Spano and Christopher Behr pounded out hit a
The defense of the whole team, especially Conor Maher, Robert Groth, Ryan Perez, Billy Burkhart and Joshua Persaud, was sparkling. The players gave up only one run in three innings, having a lapse only in the second inning.
The Rangers also made some great defensive plays. This is a team to watch in the future, being a very young team with a lot of 7-year-olds. Watch out for them next year. The final score of the game was McDonalds Royals 17, J.J. Peabody Rangers 7. James Curran, who had two triples and eight RBIs, and Paul Benoit, who had a great game offensively and defensively, received the game balls.

Joe’s Pizza Cyclones tame Tigers for ninth straight win
The Tigers scored the first two runs and the last two runs of the game, but the Cyclones scored 11 and won their ninth straight game, 11-4. The win puts the Cyclones’ magic number at 1 to clinch first place in the Glen Oaks International Boys’ division.
Cyclone hurlers James Wolfin and Trevor Stark struck out 11 batters over the first five innings to keep the Tigers at bay as Joe’s Pizza jumped out to an 11-2 lead. Blake Cholost, Scott Carey, Jazz Singh and Billy Hannigan had big hits in the Cyclones’ four-run third inning.
James Wolfin hit his fifth home run to highlight the Cyclones’ four-run fourth inning. Sean Dolan and Ryan Barello had hard hits to drive in runs in the Tigers’ final at bat off Cyclones’ relief pitcher Joey Shafer.
Michael Kelly was awarded a game ball for his sterling defensive play at second base. Billy Hannigan got a game ball for his bases-loaded blast into right field, and Matt Dykeman also received a game ball for his all-around excellent play against the Tigers. Rohan Shah also contributed to the win with excellent defense at third base.
Joe’s Pizza’s eighth consecutive victory was a 5-4 squeaker over the L.I. Tomahawk Braves. Cyclones’ reliever Blake Cholost struck out the Braves’ final batter with the bases loaded in the visiting sixth to record the save. Blake struck out eight batters in his three innings of wo%rk.
Braves’ Kevin Han played a great game for his team with a two-run home run, throwing out a Cyclones’ runner at the plate and doing some fine relief pitching. Rohan Shah’s double and Danny Graham’s single were the big hits in Joe’s Pizza’s four-run first inning.
Billy Hannigan’s bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the fifth inning delivered Danny Graham with the eventual winning run for the Cyclones.
Seals take on Twins
The Seals, like every other team from the PeeWees to the Majors, has been feeling the effects of the weather. A rocky playing and practice schedule have made the 6- to 8-year-olds’ fielding uncertain at best, but sometimes all it takes is just one play to galvanize a team. Dillon Grodotzke’s two-run homer in the bottom of the second did just that.
Prior to Grodotzke’s homer, the Twins’ solid fielding and consistent batting kept the Seals running, literally. A series of baseline dribbles kept the Twins alive and the Seals’ fielders on edge, yet the Seals kept at it.
Tapping into what is becoming their trademark hustle in the bottom of the first, Billy Chakalis, Lawrence Roodenberg and Alex Chowske managed to turn infield grounders into base hits. But it wasn’t until Jake Vitulli’s RBI triple in the bottom of the second that the tide began to turn. The tidy triple seemed to inspire heavy hitter Grodotzke, and he stepped up, sending a rip to left field. Tristan Boehm’s RBI closed the inning.
Suddenly they were playing as a team. Other standouts were Joey Femia at third base and Chowske at short. Solid batting by Tyler Nacionales, David Baum, Jesse Boehm and Jeremy Blitz made this game the Seal’s tightest playing to date.
Modell’s Lions take a close one from Marcella’s Pizza A’s
After several rainouts in May, the Glen Oaks Little League was back in the swing of things this past Saturday when the Modell’s Lions played the Marcella’s Pizza A’s. The Lions won, 6-3, in a well-played contest between these two teams.
The A’s scored early in the first inning thanks to a leadoff triple by Adam Alcamo, who later scored on Ben Klein’s RBI groundout to give the A’s a 1-0 lead. The Lions responded with three runs in their own bottom half when Joey Caraballo walked, stole second and scored on Anthony Meo’s RBI single to tie the game at 1.
Darryl Boston followed with a single, scoring Meo with the Lions’ second run, after stealing second. Boston scored the third run of the inning when Stephen Lecesse hit a hard grounder to left field good for an RBI and giving the Lions a 3-1 advantage.
In the top of the third inning the A’s came back strong with two runs to make the score 3-2. Once again Alcamo led off with a bullet through the middle for a single. After stealing second, Alcamo reached home on an RBI single off the bat of Ben Klein, who reached second on a throw to home. With Klein on second, Justin Dilan tied the score with a single to right, scoring Klein and making this game an interesting one to the delight of all in attendance.
The Lions took the lead in the bottom half when Caraballo hit a double to left and scored on Meo’s second RBI single of the day. Meo later scored on Boston’s RBI double to give the Lions a 5-3 lead.
Anthony Meo pitched a good game, matching the A’s hurlers, who tried very hard to keep the game close. They did a very good job and the final score verified that. The final Lions’ run came in the fifth when Caraballo walked for the second time, stole second and third and scored on a grounder by Boston.
It was a well-played game, and it was nice to see all the ball players back in the field having fun on a rather cloudy day.
Alcamo was the hitting star for the A’s, with three hits in three at bats, including a triple. Ben Klein had two singles in three at bats, and Dilan had a single that was good for a run.
For the Lions, Anthony Meo went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Caraballo had a double, Boston finished with two hits, and Stephen Lecesse had an RBI single in two official at bats.
Phillies top New Hyde Park, 10-6
The Burger King Phillies continued their winning streak this week by defeating a very good New Hyde Park team, 10-6. Rita Romeo went to the mound and threw three strong innings and was followed by Julia Hannigan and Sara Correa.
Offensively, the Phillies struggled at the plate for the first time this year only picking up six hits, but they were timely, as the team still managed to score 10 runs. Julia Hannigan and Rita Romeo each had two hits withTheo picking up one and Kaitlin Smolen hitting a home run. Collen Harrison played a strong game at second base with two putouts and two assists.
Hillside Paint Depot Angels sink Glen Oaks Mariners
The Glen Oaks Hillside Paint Depot Angels improved their season record to 4-5 by defeating the Glen Oaks Mariners this past week.
Ray Potestio took the mound for the Angels and threw a great game before tiring and giving way to Pervez Khan, who closed out the game. Potestio threw 5.1 innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out four. The Angels continued their steady improvement on defense by committing only two errors while making numerous tough plays throughout the game. Two defensive standouts were Steven Velez, who threw out two runners, and Anup Shah, who made a diving stab at second base.
Offensively, the Hillside Paint Depot Angels continued to spread the hits out. Brain Biscotti had a double and scored a run, John Diniscia singled with two RBIs, Praveen Nair singled and drove in a run, Nikil Kumar had an RBI and scored twice, Daniel Gasperati singled twice and drove in two and Christian Venturella had three RBIs on two singles.
The Highlights for the Mariners included strong pitching performances from Jason Sophie and Kevin Salcedo, as well as singles by Ryan Paroulek, Mohammed Hashim and three walks by Kevin Carberry.
