The last of the series of summer races conducted by the College Point Road Runners Track Club was a relay race of 3.1 miles held this past weekend in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
A team consisting of three members had to enter the competition. The two other races during the summer were two individual 5K events.
“We had something different,” said CPRRTC President Carmen Moreno. “It was nice and exciting. Our club was well-represented. This was the wrap-up series for the year, and we hope to resume our summer races in 2004.”
The Male Open winner was the CPRRTC ‘A’ team comprised of Chris Yepez, Yorki Munoz and Juna Mena, who completed the course in 14:39.31. They finished ahead of the West Side Runners comprised of Alfonso Polonia, Victor Garcia and Carlos Roldan, timed in at 14:43.96.1.
The Open Masters trio of Jim Atkins, Romero Munoz and Rigo Menendez representing College Point wound up in eighth place, completing the race in 17.18.13.
However, the high school team of Gary Chan, Francis Attah and anchor Paul Marosan, all from the CPRRTC, finished third in 15:40.
“It marked the first time we ran something like this and we had fun doing it,” Marosan said.
Members of the club will evaluate the summer series, prepare for next year and enter races, including the New York City Marathon. Moreno and her staff will be out in force during the fall to time different races in Queens.
