The 12-year-old Whitestone Wanderers defeated the Long Island Gold in two out of three games this past week. The Wanderers won, 11-4, last week, as Chris Moreno, John Montoya and Joey Depperman each hit a home run and drove in two RBIs. John Massa deliver
On Saturday, the two teams split a doubleheader. The Gold took the opener, 8-7, and then the Wanderers responded with a 22-11 win in the nightcap. Moreno shined in both ends of the doubleheader by going a perfect 7-for-7 with an astounding six home runs and 14 RBIs on the day. Mike Georgeou went deep twice, while Kevin Brown hit one out of the yard as well. Chris Cacioppo and Giancarlo Santillo each had three hits on the day.
The 12-year-old Wanderers also suffered a tough 2-1 loss to the Long Island Reds. Chris Moreno struck out five in two hitless innings. Vincent Florido relieved Moreno and gave up one hit and no runs in the next two innings. John Montoya had two hits, and Moreno, Mike Georgeou and Charlie Reyes each had a hit.
Last Thursday, the 10-year-old Wanderers crushed the RGMVM Twins, 17-2, to improve their record to a perfect 5-0. Nick Zavattieri supplied some lumber with three hits, two of which were home runs. Shane Lowery and John Franchini also contributed three hits each. Vinny Depperman, Mike Gallagher, Joe Marin, Tommy Regan and Patrick Thompson chipped in with a hit a piece.
Brandon Sheiner shut down the Twins, pitching three scoreless innings before giving way to Lowery and Mike Formato. Gallagher’s play behind the plate aided in the fine pitching performances, as he threw out two base-runners attempting to steal.
On Monday the 11-year-old Wanderers, led by Anthony Andreani and Shane Lowery, who each pitched three innings, beat the Astoria Cobras, 12-4.
Lowery shined at the plate as well, going 3-for-3 with a triple and a home run. Nick Zavattieri also hit a home run, sending a monster shot over the left field wall. Chris Coppolino, Vinny Depperman and Nick Manetta each had two hits, and Peter Forgione and Tommy Regan had a hit a piece.
The Wanderers won, 23-14, in a wild game against Boys Club on Wednesday. The Wanderers pulled off a triple play when Patrick Thompson caught a line drive in right field and fired to first baseman Gallagher for the second out. Gallagher then threw to second base, where Brandon Shiener recorded the third out.
Andreani hit safely in four at-bats during the game. Lowery and Regan had three hits each, while Gallagher and Joe Marin collected two hits a piece. Depperman reached base four times with a single and three walks, and Kevin Campbell had a hit and walked twice.
Vincent Florido and Nick Zavattieri each had two hits to lead the 11-year-old Wanderers over the Long Island Storm, 8-2. Nick Lamonaca, Anthony Polito, Brandon Rosenthal, George Zorrilla, Depperman and Massa had a hit a piece. Winning pitcher Greg Polkowski was backed by flawless fielding.
Depperman, Florido and Zavattieri combined for five put-outs and eight assists, while first baseman Mike Dinto recorded 13 put-outs. With one week left in the regular season, the Wanderers are in first place in the N.C.Y.A.A. with a 9-1 record.
