The seventh-grade girls from Our Lady of the Snows played well and defeated St. Margaret’s of Middle Village, 30-21, in a diocesan quarterfinal playoff matchup at Corpus Christi gym in Woodside.
St. Margaret’s jumped ahead in the first quarter and led briefly through several lead changes later in the game, but the OLS team turned in an all-around quality performance and pulled away at the game’s end. The Snow’s girls shot an incredible 12-of-14 from the free-throw line, led by Nicole Weinman, who hit 7-of-8 and led Snows with 13 points.
Adara Simonelli led the offense and added six points. Tina Khiani and Michelle Gasperetti scored four points each, Nicole Kaouris had two points, and Jennifer Maurer had one, rounding out the OLS scoring. Danielle Carberry and Jennifer Maurer came off the bench to make several key contributions to the overall winning effort. The team is coached by Mike McGovern and Al Weinman.
OLS Intermediates edged by St. Francis De Sales in an exciting finish
Coached by Paul Hnath and Jerry Pelan, the Snows’ eighth-grade girls fought back from a 10-point fourth-quarter deficit to tie the game at 31 with about 30 seconds remaining. But St. Francis prevailed, 35-31. Cadie Chu and Danielle Hnath hit clutch three-point shots to narrow the deficit, and Chu tied the game with a clutch free throw.
Cadie Chu led OLS with 12 points, Erin Stanton scored eight points, and Danielle Hnath added five points. The entire Snows’ team played its heart out, with Stephanie Posa, Michelle Pelan, Allison Luciani and Jamie Hannigan contributing pressure defense in key minutes off the bench. Kelly Stanton and Sara also scored and played key roles in the OLS effort.
