There is joy in Mudville.

After six seasons of playing on borrowed fields, the Little Leaguers in College Point step up to the plate this season on their home turf. The city has decided to open the College Point sports complex in time for opening day this Saturday. The fields will be open for the Little League season and will close again for additional construction when the season is over.

The frustration that has lasted for nearly seven years is coming to an end. The city has designed a beautiful complex that will be far better than anything that College Point enjoyed in the past. This will be a truly exciting place worthy of the good people who live in this community. In the years to come thousands of families will gather here to watch and take part in an array of sporting events including baseball, softball, soccer, football and roller hockey.

For readers who may not know, the sports complex was closed seven years ago when the city discovered that tons of dirt that was trucked in to solve a drainage problem was littered with construction debris. The fields were padlocked and for six long years nothing happened.

We applaud the agencies responsible for designing the complex and building the fields. And we applaud the patience and persistence of the College Point Little League that survived six years in exile. Keeping the league alive was a remarkable achievement.

We also applaud the community leaders and elected officials who helped raise funds for this project and helped open the gates for the 2004 season.
