Rosalyn Gold-Onwude remembers the feeling when the Molloy girls’ basketball team played Our Lady of Lourdes at the Briarwood school on Jan. 30.
The junior guard was in foul trouble for much of the game and the player she was guarding — Lourdes standout Julianna Viani — scored 31 points in the Stanners’ come-from-behind 69-61 overtime win.
“When that happens, you take it personally. I was upset for days,” Gold-Onwude said.
Retribution for Gold-Onwude came Saturday in the state Federation Class A championship game, where she held the Fairfield-bound Viani to just eight points while scoring a game-high 25 points, including 4-of-6 shooting from three-point range to garner game MVP honors.
Molloy raced out to a 28-8 lead, held Lourdes to just two second-quarter points and cruised to a 63-45 win at the Glens Falls Civic Center.
“She was unbelievable,” Lourdes coach Sarah Mesuch said of Gold-Onwude. “She just stepped up and knew it was game time.”
Jessica McEntee had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and Keri Anne Jetter added eight points and 11 rebounds for Molloy in the win over Our Lady of Lourdes … Molloy’s Sundiata Gaines, Brian Beckford from Christ the King and St. John’s Prep standout Bryant Dunston have been named to the roster for the 6th annual Wendy’s All-Star Shootout April 10 at DePaul University in Chicago. Christ the King coach Bob Oliva will coach Team New York in the game, which will be televised on ABC-TV at 1 p.m.
