Those dark clouds Lewis spoke about in last week’s “On the Mound with Jonathan Lewis” have apparently dissipated. In one of his strongest outings of the year, Lewis went the distance in a 9-1 win over Hartford and was named America East Pit
In an all-important conference weekend, the Stony Brook baseball team came together and swept the Hartford Hawks in a three-game series.
And, yes, that means I finally won a game after a rough losing streak.
I pitched the second game of the series and had a career-high 13 strikeouts en route to a 9-1 win. This time my teammates pounded the ball and supported me with nine runs.
It is very relieving to finally win after going through my first losing streak. It has also made the rest of the weekend more enjoyable and my day-after-pitching routine easier.
The day after our starts might be the toughest with a half-hour run, long toss, a fitness circuit and our arm band exercises.
Winning definitely makes this a lot easier and more enjoyable.
Personally this was a big weekend to help me get my confidence back, especially with a tough weekend coming up with the University of Maine one of the better teams in the East Coast.
The game I pitched went well. I felt strong from start to finish.
I struck out the side in the seventh and as I was writing this article, I was informed I was named the America East Pitcher of the Week.
My record is 3-6 — which is still awful — but at least some of my other numbers are starting to resemble those of previous seasons.
I am among the leaders in my conference in strikeouts, number of innings pitched and lowest earned run average. I am confident in my stuff but just worried that my record might have chased away some people (scouts) who have been following me around for the past couple of seasons.
One other thing that’s been on my mind lately is getting back into the Cape (Cod League).
The head coach of Hartford is also the coach of the Bourne Braves, and I’m hoping that I opened his eyes enough to get a shot at going back up there in case the draft doesn’t work out.
At least with all the recent struggles I went through it has made winning that much sweeter.
But now it’s back to work and a long week of weight training, throwing, running and our arm band routine again.
With lots of the season left we must build off this past weekend and take the momentum into the rest of the year to help us get back to the conference championships.
