New laptops grace PS 99, thanks to Katz, principal

By Tommy Hallissey

PS 99, located at 82-37 Kew Gardens Rd., got a fresh supply of 56 new Dell laptop computers for all of its classrooms last week. Katz used her discretionary funds to pick up the tab for 50 of those computers. Six were paid for by the principal, who kicked in an extra $8,000 to finish the project.

In addition to the laptops, PS 99 received 11 new laser printers, 11 new scanners, 11 wireless Internet connection hubs and a smart media board for large-scale computer presentation. Now each of the 10 fifth- and sixth-grade classrooms and the library has its own computer center.

“The students are overwhelmed, excited, ecstatic,” said Amy Reynolds, library media specialist. “They're in disbelief that they have these [computers] in their classroom.”

Principal Paulette Foglio said the grant from Katz was an answer to her dream of better computers for her children.

“I want all the children to understand how valuable this gift is,” said Foglio. “Councilwoman Melinda Katz has moved PS 99 into the 21st century.”

The children of PS 99, who offered a basket of thank you cards to Katz, prepared a slide show presentation to demonstrate their appreciation. Students also read aloud a few of their letters.

“The laptops are so first class and completely amazing,” said Ailanit Davydova, a fifth-grade student.

Karen Dix, president of the Parents' Association, expressed her gratitude as well. “On behalf of all the parents at PS 99, we thank you,” said Dix.

Katz, a product of public schools, could be seen laughing through the whole production. “All of you are expected to give $100,000 in 25 years to your favorite school,” joked Katz.

But when the subject of the city budget came up, Katz turned serious. “We're going to fight so that you get as much money as possible in the city budget,” she said.

PS 99 is not unique in receiving discretionary funds from Katz. PS 174 and Forest Hills High School also have benefited from Katz's largesse in the past.

“We're doing all our schools,” said Katz. “Eventually we'll get around to all of them.”

Katz said she was impressed by the children's performance at the assembly. “It makes you believe that your doing the right thing,” she said.
