The 11-year-old team rallied from a 9-1 deficit after three innings to defeat the Long Island Lightning, 11-10 July 22. The Wanderers got two runs in the fourth, six in the fifth and two in the sixth inning. Rocco Sacramone pitched 3.1 innings of relief, allowing one run on two hits and a walk to pick up the win. Mike Dallal was 3-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs and threw out a runner at first from right field and made a big catch in the sixth inning.
Brandon Sheiner had a clutch two-out hit in the fifth inning to tie the game at 9. Justin Reis made three good plays at short and had a key double, Joe Marin had a single, an RBI double and scored twice, Adam Lipowicz also had two hits and an RBI. Joey Bernardez scored two runs, Pat Thompson had an RBI in the six-run fifth inning and TJ Ajah had a pair of clutch catches in left field.
With the score tied at 9 in the sixth inning, Mike Bacoti walked, stole second and stole third. With two out, Devin Feranti, who had an RBI in the third inning, was hit by a pitch. Feranti stole second and Dallal delivered the dramatic game-winning hit.
Last Thursday the 11-year-old team beat the Garden City A's, 10-4 behind the strong pitching of Reis, who tossed a complete game and reached base safely four times (two hits, two hit-by-pitches).
Dallal's bat stayed hot, going 2-for-4 with a two-run home run, Feranti also had two hits and played well defensively at short, Zach Filippi, Bernardez and Marin each had a hit. Lipowicz caught a fly ball in centerfield and threw a strike to Filippi at home who tagged out the runner from third attempting to score.
The 11-year-old team capped their week with a doubleheader sweep of the Lightning Saturday.
The 9-year-old Wanderers split a doubleheader with the Long Island Cougars, winning the opener 10-2 and dropping the nightcap, 10-3.
The Wanderers got dominating pitching from Greg Massa and Anthony Samela in the opener. Massa pitched the first four innings, allowing two runs while striking out 10. Samela tossed two scoreless innings and struck out three. Frank Marin had a bases-loaded triple that landed just short of the 180-foot sign in center, Massa had two hits and Michael Cheesman, Jamie Gunkel, Angelo Luongo and Samela had one hit apiece.
In the nightcap, Mike Rosario pitched three solid innings, allowing one run while striking out six. The Wanderers held a 3-1 lead heading into the fourth inning but the relief pitching didn't hold up. The Cougars scored two runs in the fourth and broke the game open with a seven-run fifth. Andrew Florides and Jamie Narlis were the only Wanderers to get a hit in the second game while Chris Regan played great defensively at second base.
The 10-year-old Wanderers improved to 3-0 with a 9-5 win over the Valley Stream Hawks July 21. The Wanderers went up 2-0 in the top of the first inning and the Hawks loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the inning. With one out the rally was squashed when Anthony Andreani, Peter Forgione and Ben Horowitz turned a 1-2-3 double play.
Another Hawks rally was cut short when shortstop Kevin Green snared a line drive in the sixth inning. Andreani and Shane Lowrey combined on the mound for the win and the Wanderers got excellent defensive play and key hits from Alexis Demolina, Andrew Goldstein, MJ Laplace, Tommy Regan, Andreani, Forgione and Lowrey.
Vincent Florido led the 12-year-old Wanderers to a 12-2 victory over the Valley Stream Hawks Monday. He pitched a complete game, striking out six while not allowing a walk. Anthony Polito led the offense, going 4-for-4 with three stolen bases.
In the fifth inning the Wanderers sent 14 men to the plate and scored eight times to break open what was a close game.
Shortstop Greg Polkowski had two hits and twice hooked up with Florido to pick off runners at second base. Nick Lamonaca was on base five times (a single, an error and three walks), John Liquori had a single and walked twice and John Massa made three nice catches in right field.
The 13-year-old Wanderers split a Sunday doubleheader with the Long Island Lightning.
