Astoria celebrates Greeks

Astoria community members celebrated their heritage with songs, dances, and food.
Over 300 people packed the Hellenic Cultural Center in Astoria last week, where Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School students performed dances in traditional Grecian costumes.
Four members of the Greek-Americans were honored for their work within the community - Jerry Filippidis, owner of Ares Printing; Athena Kromidas, Principal of the William Spyropoulos School in Flushing; Theodore Moscokarfis, owner of Thessaloniki Jewelry; Gregory Pavlides, Bureau Chief for Economic Crimes in the Queens District Attorney’s Office.
“The tremendous outpouring for this celebration shows the vibrancy and pride of the Greek-American community in New York,” said Assemblyman Michael Gianaris, who co-sponsored the event with Borough President Helen Marshall.
