Community Board 10 honors ‘old timer’

By Helen Klein

It was an opportunity to look back a bit and reminisce. At the January meeting of Community Board 10, board member Frances Loftus, who has served on the board for three decades, was singled out for the honor of the pledge. In addition, the board unveiled a plaque that will hang in the district office enumerating all of the community activists who have served as chair from the very beginning. Speaking to the crowd gathered in the community room at Shore Hill, 9000 Shore Road, Loftus said, “I can’t believe it’s 30 years., but everybody says time goes fast when you are doing something you enjoy. I am proud to have served for 30 years, and I encourage the younger members to stay on the board, enjoy it and stay with it.” Each of the board’s chairs had his own style, Loftus recalled. “Each chair,” she told the crowd, “brought his own expertise and was very unique to the office.” CB 10 has been in existence for 30 years. Its first chair was Charles Ahl, father of current board member Greg Ahl. Following Ahl, the board was chaired by Louis Ross, Joseph Bova, David Vaughan, Arthur Schack, William Salerno, Basil Capetanakis, John DeMartini, Kirk Tzanides, Stephen Harrison and Craig Eaton. The current chair is Dean Rasinya. Two former chairs – Vaughan and Schack – are currently Brooklyn Supreme Court justices.
