The teenager, Edison Guaman, who was taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center after the incident, was charged with assault, attempted robbery, resisting arrest and criminal possession of a weapon, a spokeswoman for the Queens district attorney said Tuesday.Guaman, of 95-20 42nd Ave. in Elmhurst, was listed in stable condition, a source said. The incident began about 5:10 a.m. Sunday when the lieutenant from the 115th Police Precinct, which covers Jackson Heights, spotted Guaman and another suspect allegedly attacking a man on 90th Street between 35th and 37th avenues, authorities said. The victim called out to the officer who was driving in a car: “Help, Help!” and the lieutenant stopped the vehicle and got out. As he approached the two attackers, he identified himself in English and Spanish as an officer, and showed them his Police Department shield, police said. The two suspects began running south down 90th Street toward 37th Avenue, where the officer caught one of them and they began to struggle, authorities said. Guaman then approached with a beer bottle and the officer fought with him, and at that time the gun went off, police said.It was unclear who fired the shot, which struck the teenager in the torso, police said. The other suspect fled and was still being sought Monday, they said.If it is determined that the officer shot the teenager, it will be the third shooting of a suspect by the police in just over two months in Queens. On Nov. 25 police officers killed Sean Bell, 23, and wounded two others in a barrage of gunfire after the three left a night club in Jamaica. On Dec. 8, 24-year-old Wayne Bolton of Fresh Meadows was shot in the legs by police officers after he allegedly pulled a gun on them in the Lefrak City Parking Garage in Corona, authorities said.City Councilman Peter Vallone (D-Astoria) planned to request this Thursday that the quarterly reports the Police Department is required to provide to the Council on random searches known as “stop and frisks” should include the number of rounds fired by officers, a Vallone spokesman said.Reach reporter Adam Pincus by e-mail at news@timesledger.com or by phone at 718-229-0300, Ext. 154.
