Men in Queens are now learning the appeal of some pampering with the opening of Brooks Barber and Spa in Jamaica.
Caribbean native Alex Charles, also known as Brooks, had worked as a barber for about seven years in America but had never owned his own facility. When it came time to start the shop, which opened last December, the idea came about to also have spa elements for men.
Along with being a barbershop, Brooks Barber and Spa offers manicures, pedicures, facials, peel washes, hair braiding, twists and relaxing, among other services.
Althea Alexander, who is a partner in the business with Charles, said that their motto is, “Taking care of yourself is like taking care of your health.” She said that maintaining yourself is important, just like going for a doctor’s check-up is important.
“Our goal is for more people to take care of themselves,” Alexander said.
According to Alexander the many different services that Brooks Barber and Spa has to offer its clients helps set it apart from other businesses. She also said that, since its opening, they have gotten a very good response to the business and that people are adapting to it.
“The most rewarding part is seeing people embrace it without criticism,” said Alexander, adding that the clients are enjoying it more.
Brooks Barber and Spa is located at 123-30 Merrick Boulevard in Jamaica. It is open Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
