York seeks trumpeters

All young jazz fans, Tom Zlabinger needs you.
Zlabinger, director of music at The Jazz Workshop and The Blue Notes at CUNY York College, is looking for two high school trumpet players to complete the band for his Summer Jazz Institute.
Competition for the program is fierce. “About 60 people applied this year,” said Zlabinger, and 30 were accepted, but there is still some space in the band for two more student trumpet players.
The Summer Jazz Institute at CUNY York College is a tuition-free program for students ages 14-17. Running Monday to Thursday mornings from July 9 through August 9, Zlabinger teaches students from all over the city music theory and jazz history. The students earn five college credits for the course, which is sponsored by College Now.
Along with studies, students also have a chance to perform. There are at least three concerts given during the summer program: one evening performance, a graduation performance, and a performance at the Louis Armstrong House in celebration of Armstrong’s birthday, said Zlabinger.
“This opportunity is ideal for any student who wants to improve as a musician,” said Zlabinger, “and get a feeling for what it is like to be in a professionally-run big band.”
