The Queens Zoo recently celebrated its 15th birthday with two cakes - one for the partygoers and one for the bison herd.
The party took place at the Zoo located in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park on Thursday, June 21 and was attended by Queens Borough President Helen Marshall and Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) Assistant Director of the Queens Zoo, Dr. Scott Silver who spoke about the history and the accomplishments of the Zoo.
City Councilmembers Peter Vallone, Helen Sears, and David Weprin, members of the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation, as well as others, were present to sing happy birthday and sign a large happy birthday card.
To end the ceremony, the Queens Zoo Bison Herd, Rosie, Artie, Sky, Morgan and Dakota devoured a large birthday cake made of hay, carrots and apples as everybody else enjoyed a traditional slice of cake.
“The Zoo is truly a Zoo of the Americas providing entertainment and learning experiences for young and old alike,” said Marshall, who has allocated over $3 million to the Zoo's projects.
The Queens Zoo was built on the site of the 1964 World's Fair on June 25, 1992. The 11-acre wildlife facility is now home to approximately 400 animals of over 60 species.
