Glendale pushes for own zip code

Although a representative from the United States Postal Service recently told another Queens weekly newspaper that Glendale would not be receiving its own zip code anytime soon, local elected officials and community representatives are vowing to continue their campaign.
“It’s important to the people,” said Assemblymember Anthony Seminerio, who represents the area and has written to U.S. Senators Hillary Clinton and Chuck Schumer as well as Congressmembers Anthony Weiner and Joe Crowley asking for their help. “They [Glendale residents] want to feel that they are an entity within themselves.”
Currently, Glendale and Ridgewood share a zip code, and according to data from the 2000 census, more than 97,000 people lived in the 11385 area.
Brian Dooley, who is the President of the Glendale Property Owners, said that his organization plans to pursue the matter, and he believes that it would serve the residents of Glendale much better if the community had its own zip code.
“We have a fair number of elderly people that get prescriptions so getting those to the right place and in a timely manner is critical,” Dooley said.
Meanwhile, Community Board 5 District Manager Gary Giordano said that the board has not been contacted formally about the issue, and although he considers it mainly a federal issue, he said the board would consider it.
“I think a neighborhood that has over 30,000 people warrants its own zip code,” he said.
Informal talks about getting Glendale its own zip code have taken place at various times during the last five years. In addition, Weiner, City Councilmember Dennis Gallagher, State Senator Serphin Maltese and Assemblymember Andrew Hevesi have all written letters in support of the plan, but no action has taken place yet.
