Walters didn’t do much in his first regular season with the Judges. His playoff contributions, however, won’t be soon forgotten. After scoring just 3.3 points per game in 18 league games, losing his spot as the backup point guard to freshman Chris Gayot, he took advantage of a second chance. In three borough playoff games, he bumped his averaged up to 5.6 points per game, including a 10-point, five rebound outburst in the Queens Final, a 58-51 Cardozo win over Campus Magnet.
“Big, he was the key factor,” teammate and leading scorer Trinity Fields said. “He got in the lane and made shots. He stepped up.”
“They weren’t keying on me,” Walter said. “This was the best game of my life.”
The 5-foot-9 Walters, who transferred into Cardozo from Archbishop Molloy following his freshman year, often clashed with Coach Ron Naclerio, upset about playing time and his limited role. Slowly but surely, his attitude has changed.
“‘Junior’s’ been coming on for us,” Naclerio said. “He’s a kid that has a lot of confidence. He’s been spoiled by the AAU scene. He was one of those kids, when he was in the third grade, you heard about him being the next coming. But I love the kid. I think he has a great future.”
