Lewis faces unenviable match-up with Bergtraum

“We're not an elite team like we used to be,” the coach said. “But we can beat an elite team if we play really well.”In order to advance in the playoffs, Lewis won't need to just beat an elite team, it'll have to beat the elite team in the PSAL: Murry Bergtraum.Bergtraum is the No. 2 team in the country, according to USA Today, and the defending New York State Federation Class AA champion. The Blazers are trying to win their 10th straight PSAL city championship and they've beaten Eisenberg's Patriots seven out of the last eight years in the playoffs, including five times at Madison Square Garden, the venue for the title game.”I'm proud to say that I have, along with the coach of the Washington Generals when they used to play the Globetrotters, the worst winning percentage in Madison Square Garden history,” Eisenberg joked.Lewis, the No. 8 seed, and top-seeded Bergtraum will meet in the quarterfinals, for the second consecutive season, Saturday at York College. Tip-off is set for 5 p.m. Last year, Bergtraum won the match-up, 80-37.”We're just gonna play,” said senior point guard Sylvia Davis, who will play next year at St. Thomas Aquinas College. “We gotta forget their numbers, how many wins they have…We have to prove a point. You can't sleep on us. When everyone's on, we can be a really good team.”Reach Associate Sports Editor Marc Raimondi by e-mail at mraimondi@timesledger.com or call 718-229-0300, Ext. 130.
