The New York City Transit Authority is reaching back into the heyday of the early-1900s with tentative plans to conduct trial runs of double-decker buses like those that long traversed Fifth Avenue.
NYCTA President Howard Roberts said the agency may bring back double-decker buses, which ran for decades until 1953, then later made a brief return.
Roberts said he plans to use double-deckers this summer in experimental runs, probably on Fifth Avenue, to determine their feasibility.
Roberts said it appeared that the double-deckers would cost less to operate and maintain and would hold about the same number of passengers as the double-size buses that bend in the middle.
What was it like as a straphanger on the double-decker buses of yesteryear?
