Store scoops to conquer

Pediatric cancer could be the most heart-rending illness imaginable, which is one reason why Edy’s Grand Ice Cream and the Stop & Shop supermarket chain paired up on a “scoop day” at all Stop & Shop stores.
Stop & Shop’s “Triple Winner Game” is a scratch card promotion in which every ticket can be an instant winner of either a free product, a gift card or cash prize up to $10,000.
The program allows customers who make a $1 donation in any Stop & Shop store to receive a Triple Winner Game ticket. The Edy’s company decided to sweeten the deal.
On Saturday, May 3, from 1 to 5 p.m. customers at all Stop & Shop locations that contributed $1 to the cause got a free scoop of Edy’s Grand Ice Cream to go with their ticket. Those who gave $3 got a scoop, a ticket and a special American Idol “Hot Tracks” CD with music recorded by former American Idol performers.
Customers at the Little Neck store, at Northern Boulevard and Marathon Parkway, also got to meet Amy, a six-year-old girl from Queens with leukemia, who is a 2008 member of the Triple Winner family. She is receiving treatment at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center care and research, supported by the game.
Triple Winner will raise more than $5.25 million in 2008 to fight pediatric cancer, according to the store. Donations made in Stop & Shop’s New England stores went to The Jimmy Fund.
According to Edy’s, they gave out more than 50,000 scoops of ice cream to generous customers throughout the Stop & Shop chain. All of customer donations went towards fighting childhood cancer.
To further support Triple Winner charities, Edy’s Grand Ice Cream will donate $25,000 from the sale of its Slow Churned Take the Cake limited edition flavor.
The Free Scoop Day and Take the Cake donation combined will help Edy’s raise an anticipated $100,000 for pediatric cancer charities.
