Gantry Park in LIC will host concerts

By Natalie Shields

Gantry Plaza State Park will host a series of nine free musical performances every week this summer to showcase Queens' cultural diversity and support its thriving artistic community.

" 'Live at the Gantries' will provide an opportunity for our neighbors and visitors to enjoy relaxing summer evenings in one of the most spectacular waterfront locations in the city," said Paul Januszewski, president of the Queens West Development Corp., which oversees the neighborhood's development and activities.

The summer series will take place each Tuesday from June 24 to August 26 at 7 p.m. in the park, along the East River between 49th and 50th avenues. The artists slated to perform use a variety of styles and come from diverse backgrounds, very similar to Queens' demographics.

"The performances from local talent through this new and free summer music series will highlight what makes this borough truly one of a kind," Januszewski said.

"Live at the Gantries" welcomes youth of all ages to enjoy the views of the city, experience the vibrant theatre and music and bask in Queens culture.

The event has been brought together by the state Parks, Recreation, and Historical Preservation Office, Queens Theatre in the Park and New York Water Taxi.
