JAMAICA — Police caught a man suspected of robbing a bank at gunpoint Tuesday just blocks from the 103rd Precinct, authorities said.
The 59-year-old man, whose name had not yet been released Tuesday night, entered the Chase Bank branch at 161-10 Jamaica Ave. at about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday, displayed a gun and demanded money from a teller, police said.
The teller complied and the man fled the bank on foot, but a dye pack inserted with the money exploded when the man neared the intersection of Guy R. Brewer Boulevard and Archer Avenue, police said.
Two officers on foot patrol in the area saw the dye pack explode, ordered the man to stop, chased him down and apprehended him, police said. The man was found to be carrying the proceeds from the robbery, the exploded dye pack and an imitation pistol, police said.
As of Tuesday evening the man had not been charged, police said.
