Queens voters love Bloomberg, but not for a third term

Queens voters give Mayor Michael Bloomberg their overwhelming support but they are even more enthusiastic about retaining term limits that would bar Bloomberg from a third term, according to a new poll.

The Quinnipiac University poll shows Bloomberg with a 42 percent approval rate among Queens voters. But in Queens, voters are 57 to 39 percent in favor of keeping term limits.

Throughout New York City, Bloomberg leads a list of mayoral candidates for the 2009 election. But citywide voters oppose by a 56-38 percent margin extending term limits.

The poll finds that 42 percent of Queens voters favor Bloomberg, while 12 percent support both Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly and U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Forest Hills), 7 percent Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, 6 percent City Comptroller William Thompson, 3 percent City Council Speaker Christine Quinn (D-Manhattan)  and 2 percent Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum.

“New York City voters sure like Mayor Mike and they’d love to keep him around for four more years, but not enough to  change the two-term limit in the City Charter,” said Maurice Carroll, director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.
