SJU alums place in Olympic trials

St. John’s track & field alumni Grace Zollman and DeWayne Barrett enjoyed impressive performances in their respective countries’ Olympic team trials over the weekend. Zollman took part in the U.S. trials while Barrett tried to make the Jamaican team. Both finished in the top 20 in their events.
“We are quite proud of Grace and DeWayne and their efforts at the Olympic trials this past weekend,” said head track & field coach Jim Hurt. “They have dedicated themselves over the past few years to reach the highest level of their sport in the United States and Jamaica.”
Barrett finished third in the 400-meter preliminary heat, crossing the tape at 46.81. In the semifinal heat he placed fifth, cutting his time by .48 seconds for a 46.33 finish. Barrett did not advance to the eight-man final; however, his semifinal finish placed him in the top 10 overall.
Zollman competed in the javelin at the United States Olympic Trials in Eugene, OR. The Joseph, OR, native placed ninth in the first flight of the javelin trials with a throw of 46.54 meters (152 feet, 8 inches), good for 19th overall.
