The Deepdale Gardens Community Council will host its 18th annual blood drive at Little Neck's Samuel Field Y Aug. 10 as blood supplies reach extremely low levels this summer, a New York Hospital Queens spokeswoman said.
The blood drive will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Y, at 58-20 Little Neck Pkwy. in Little Neck, and end at 4:30 p.m., said Barbara Foote, a hospital spokeswoman.
"There's a blood shortage right now," she said. "It's critically low, so all types are appreciated."
Foote said the drive would especially focus on getting O positive and O negative blood during the drive.
She said levels typically drop during the summer as donors spend time away from home.
"It's very typical for a blood shortage to occur around this time because regular donors go on vacations and fall out of their routines," she said.
Donors must be at least 16 years old and have parental consent if they are under 18, Foote said. They must also weigh 110 pounds and be in good health, she said.
Foote said she expects more than 200 people to show up for the event, which will also include raffles for gift certificates from local merchants, $50 savings bonds and other prizes. Visitors will be able to choose from a variety of free refreshments, including bagels and sandwiches.
People who donate blood will also receive two free passes to swim at the Y's pool, she said.
"We understand the need to ensure an adequate blood supply for our community and are willing to take the initiative to help benefit our community," said Helen Barkin, organizer for the Deepdale Gardens Community Council.
