‘Bayside' releases new album ‘SHUDDER'

The band Bayside released the album “Shudder” on September 30, showing the group's varying tastes and musical growth.
Formed in 2000, the current members of Bayside are vocalist/guitarist Anthony Raneri, drummer Chris Guglielmo, bassist Nick Ghanbarian and guitarist Jack O'Shea. Queens native Raneri is the only original member.
Ghanbarian said that work on their most recent album began last fall while they were touring. They began working on songs at that point, continuing to write possible tracks throughout the tour. They went into the studio on July 1 to record “Shudder,” which was released on Victory Records.
“I think it's a little bit more eclectic,” Ghanbarian said, adding that the songs are not too similar to one another.
In putting the album together, Ghanbarian said that the band kept in mind some of their influences from when they were younger. He also said that they listened to their favorite bands to figure out how the music made them feel.
“The answer we came up with was just the energy,” Ghanbarian said. “I think this time we just wanted to capture great energy. I'm excited.”
Ghanbarian said that one of the keys to the band's longevity in the industry has been the fact that they are constantly touring. In doing so, he said Bayside is able to constantly see what is going on in the music industry and the direction that bands are heading in.
“You kind of have to adapt to the time just to maintain relevance. We've kind of always got to be on the road and stay in the minds of people,” Ghanbarian said. “I think that being relevant and not taking any long periods off really has been our mission statement for the past five years. It's really paid off.”
Bayside predominantly focuses on the United States when it comes to their touring. However, they have gone out of the country to England, Australia, Scotland and Canada.
“Shudder” was leaked a couple of weeks before its release and it was also posted on the band's MySpace page. Ghanbarian said that they had already started to get a great response from people who had heard the tracks.
“I think people recognize the change in our musicianship and songwriting is just better,” said Ghanbarian. He also said that one thing that is “cool” about Bayside and that they appreciate in other bands is when you can hear growth from one album to the next, which he said “certainly comes through in our music.”
Bayside is currently touring and will be doing a show at Irving Plaza on November 14 at 7 p.m.
“It will be a homecoming,” Ghanbarian said. “We haven't played anywhere around here since March.”
