For the second straight year, the St. Francis Prep Terriers (3-1) defeated Holy Cross (1-4), 17-7, to retain the Battle of the Boulevard bragging rights.
Holy Cross could not get their offense going through the air with junior quarterback Jarred Evans. Despite their struggles, the Knights went into halftime down by only 10-7 after junior running back Barrington Wallace punched into the end zone with barely over ten seconds left in the first half.
During halftime, Coach Tom Pugh made a change by putting in senior quarterback Mantovani Bigot who led the Knights down the field with a nice balance through the air and on the ground but they couldn’t finish off their drives.
With four minutes left in the third quarter, Terriers running back Robert Dougherty scored on a reverse to make the score 17-7 and essentially put the game away. With a ten-point lead, the Terriers milked the clock with Tristan Akong, who scored the game-winning touchdown in last year’s annual matchup.
The Knights managed a combined 107 yards rushing, including 37 yards from Terrence Coon and 40 yards from Wallace. Between three quarterbacks, they completed 13 of 30 passes for 176 yards.
The Knights will travel to the Bronx to face Mount St. Michael next week, while St. Francis plays its next game away at Archbishop Stepinac.
