I want to thank the city Parks Department’s Forestry Division for the great job it did in planting new street trees in my section of Bayside. A nice variety were planted for all of us to enjoy in the years to come.
Trees beautify our neighborhoods and increase property values. They also clean the air and cool us in the summer. Some people disdain the leaves that fall in autumn, but they can be raked into flower beds to protect bushes and perennials over the winter. The leaves will eventually decompose to provide nutrients for the plants.
I look forward to seeing these new trees maintained and watered as they grow to enhance the landscape. Those residents fortunate enough to have a new street tree planted in front of their home can help by watering them during dry weather, especially during the first year after they are planted.
Trees help fight air pollution, which causes respiratory problems for many people, including some forms of asthma. It is important for our city to continue to plant new trees throughout the five boroughs to maintain the tree canopy that will protect our health and quality of life.
As homeowners, we should also be preserving and maintaining trees on our own properties. We and future generations will reap the benefits.
