The president of Glen Oaks Village said Con Edison has inadequately addressed the co−op’s electricity issues after a blackout last week caused 16 boilers to fail and temperatures at most of the apartments fell to the upper 50s.
“A half to three−quarters of Glen Oaks was blacked out” on Jan. 20, Glen Oaks Village President Bob Friedrich said. “This is a recurring problem with Con Ed.”
Friedrich, who is also a candidate for the City Council seat currently held by Councilman David Weprin (D−Hollis), said Glen Oaks Village has had about six to 12 blackouts in the last two years, although none on the scale of last week’s blackout.
He said 16 of the co−op’s boilers, which require electricity to pump water, were inoperable and that apartment temperatures dipped in the range of the low 60s to the upper 50s.
“In the winter, it’s really dangerous,” Friedrich said.
“There’s a problem. They haven’t resolved it,” he said. “Con Ed is not dealing with the issue.”
Friedrich said he called Con Ed six months ago “to go over these issues” and said he was told the utility “would look at it,” but has not received a response.
