KEW GARDENS — A former big league baseball player was sentenced Tuesday to spend nine months in jail for beating up his girlfriend in the fall, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Ambiorix Burgos, 24, a former Mets relief pitcher, was sentenced to nine months in jail and ordered by a judge not to have any contact with his girlfriend, Maria Lopez, according to Brown.
Burgos was convicted last month on assault charges for beating Lopez up in a room at the Holiday Inn opposite the now−defunct Shea Stadium on Sept. 8.
When the 26−year−old victim told the athlete she was going to call the police, she testified that Burgos told her, “The police won’t do anything to me. I am a baseball player,” according to the DA.
