KEW GARDENS — A Jamaica man who attacked his wife with scissors and severely injured his infant son was sentenced to 11 years in prison last week, Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said.
Intaquab Ali, 32, was convicted in July 2008 of attempted murder, assault, aggravated criminal contempt, endangering the welfare of a child and weapons possession in the 2006 attack on Nalenie Tilak.
On June 6, 2006, Ali held a machete to Tilak’s neck and demanded she drop a child support case or he would kill her. He was arrested and a judge issued an order of protection against him. But on July 23, 2006, he returned to his wife’s home and, while she was holding their 5−month−old son, began to hit her in the face and head with scissors.
Tilak required surgery to remove scissor fragments from her neck. Ali’s son, who he struck during the attack, suffered a fractured skull and required surgery. Ali was arrested on Aug. 6, 2006, but his family soon pressured his wife not to cooperate with prosecutors. A judge allowed his wife’s grand jury testimony to be used in the trial.
“Let this case serve as a warning that this office will not let defendants in domestic violence cases get away with pressuring victims not to cooperate,” Brown said in a statement. “This case is another example of how it is that we are working to break the cycle of violence that affects so many families in our city.”
