BAYSIDE — A 21-year-old Florida man was arrested after he allegedly drove drunk and crashed his car into a fence, mailbox and bushes in Bayside earlier this month, the Queens district attorney said.
Demitrios Stratakos, of Deerfield Beach, Fla., was arraigned Dec. 11 before Queens Criminal Court Judge Lenora Gerald on charges of criminal mischief, operating a motor vehicle under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an incident without reporting property damage, Queens DA Richard Brown said.
The defendant, who was released on his own recognizance, will return to court Jan. 27, the DA said.
On Dec. 10. police allegedly found Stratakos’ vehicle sitting on its driver’s side frame and saw that part of a fence, mailbox and bush at the intersection of Kingsbury Avenue and Stewart Road in Bayside were on the ground next to the car, Brown said.
Stratakos allegedly was walking unsteadily on his feet at the corner of Kingsbury Avenue and Bell Boulevard in Bayside when police spotted him, the DA said. The defendant allegedly smelled of alcohol and had bloodshot eyes, Brown said.
He is alleged to have told police, “I’m coming back from Bell Boulevard and I’m drunk — I can’t believe I crashed my car,” the DA said. The defendant allegedly refused to take a Breathalyzer test.
