Meeks funds after-school program

The holidays were bright for the South Queens Boys & Girls Club (SQBGC), as Congressmember Gregory Meeks secured $175,000 in funding for the club’s after-school program.

This is the second year that Meeks has allocated funding to the club. In the 2008-2009 school year, he awarded the club $262,000 in funding for the program.

“Congressmember Meeks plays a critical role in our success in helping at-risk youth and of fulfilling our mission of inspiring them to become caring and productive citizens,” said Carol Simon, executive director of the SQBGC. “In these trying times, Meeks knows the importance of supporting community-based organizations, like ours, that have had a significant decline in donations and revenue from other funding sources.”

The funding from the politician allows the club to continue offering homework help and tutoring, sports, technology, social recreation, and a teen center for the 2,000 youth that they serve annually. The majority of the youth served by this program are the children of immigrants.
