With the recent near-tragedy on Christmas Day involving that young man who came close to blowing up an airliner, I wonder if we as Americans are really safe anywhere anymore.
After Sept. 11, 2001, more stringent security measures were implemented nationwide to help protect us from any future terrorist attacks. Our government had no choice but to do this and has done a good job. But it seems terrorists will stop at nothing and will try anything to bring harm to the American people.
With all the events that have happened to this country over the years — Columbine, Fort Hood, the Christmas Day near-tragedy — are we as Americans safe on our own soil? It seems no matter how much the government does to protect us from terrorists and bombers, nothing will ever be 100 percent safe.
But life must and does continue to go on. People must work, go to school and do other everyday tasks. We cannot stop living our lives, but we had better be a lot more cognizant about what is going on around us each day.
God bless America and our armed servicemen and women for the job they do every day. They are the true heroes and heroines of this nation. We owe each of them a debt of gratitude.
