Day of Remembrance

The Bayside Jewish Center, together with the Jewish Center of Oak Hills, invites the public to join their members in honoring Yom HaShoah, the Day of Remembrance on Sunday, April 11, at 7 p.m.

Dr. Arthur Flug, the Executive Director of the Holocaust Resource Center and Archives at Queensborough Community College will be the guest speaker at the event, at the Bayside Jewish Center, located at 203-05 32nd Avenue.

All Holocaust survivors who wish to be included in the memorial service are invited to contact them. There is no charge for admission.

Make it stop

The Partner Abuse Counseling Program at the Samuel Field YM&YWHA of Little Neck as formed a Sunday morning support group for women who experience all types of abuse.

If you are feeling trapped, overwhelmed, or in need of support from others call Enid Miller, a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, at 718-225-6750, Ext. 243, to arrange for an appointment. There is no fee for this service.

The Samuel Field Y is located at 58-20 Little Neck Parkway.

Mobile mammography screenings

State Senator Frank Padavan and the American-Italian Cancer Foundation are sponsoring no-cost mammography screenings for the residents of northeast Queens on Saturday, April 10.

The Foundation’s mobile mammography will be outside of Senator Padavan’s District Office at 89-39 Gettysburg Street in Bellerose. There are no-out-of-pocket expenses and no co-pay.

Women 40 and older and who have not had a mammography in the past year are eligible. Appointments must be made in advance, on a first-come, first-served basis.

Mother’s Day essay and poetry contest

Assemblymember Ann-Margaret Carrozza is sponsoring a Mother’s Day essay and poetry contest for students in grades two through six in her district. Submissions may be of any length and should be based on the theme of “Why My Mother Is So Special to Me.”

“Mother’s Day provides a great opportunity for children to show their appreciation for the many things that mothers do, while at the same time strengthening their writing skills,” Carrozza said.

District-wide prizes will be awarded in each grade and New York State Assembly Certificates of Merit will be awarded to all students that participate.

The Professional Speaker’s Bureau is holding a networking event, speaker and dinner, open to all businesspersons and professionals, on Tuesday, April 13 from 6 to 8 p.m.

Bestselling author and business coach Joe Nunziata will discuss “Spiritual Selling: How To Use The Attractor Sales System To Create Abundance In Your Life.”

The event will be at the American Heart Association, 125 East Bethpage Road in Plainview. Tickets are $30 in advance or $35 at the door.

Grave humor

The Minstrel Players Theatre Company of Northport Village begins its 2010 season with Noel Coward’s classic comedy, “Blithe Spirit.”

Performances will be two weekends only on Saturday, April 17 and 24 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 18 and 25 at 3 p.m. at Houghton Hall of Trinity Episcopal Church, 130 Main Street in scenic Northport Village.

This comic farce is based in the home of British author Charles Condomine and his wife, Ruth – when a dinner party featuring mystic Madame Arcati goes awry.

Cinderella

The Andrean Players proudly announce their 2010 production of “Cinderella” to be performed in Andrean Hall at St. Andrew Avellino Church, located at 158th Street and Northern Boulevard in Flushing.

The performance runs for two weekends: Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 25 at 2 p.m., with the schedule repeating From Friday, April 30 through Sunday, May 2.
